A week in Orlando for Extra Life United

Let’s see how fast I can type this out before I head out in 4 and a half hours.

So yes! I will be going to Orlando here fairly soon. But why, you may ask. Well, there is one great reason for it. There is an annual conference that takes place there which is directly tied to Extra Life. You know Extra Life? That charity fundraiser which I participate (in my fourth year)? I probably talk about it too much.

The conference is called Extra Life United. It’s a chance for folks to draw in more donations for their hospitals via game tournaments. But more importantly, it’s a chance to interact with the kids who we play for. Representative kids, called champions, get to go to Disney World for a week. During this week, there are a few times where those kids get to hang out with the Extra Lifers.

I will be playing in the tournament this year, looking to get a sliver of the total prize pool for Seattle Children’s. The tournament consists of a video game track and a board game track. I jumped right into the board game track. I’m much better at board games than the games that require quick fingers. I’ll be playing the following games:

I spent the last week or so researching on how to play Sagrada and Downforce. I think I have it down pretty well. Here’s to hoping for success for Seattle Children’s!

Extra Life United will probably turn out to be pretty good, but in case it doesn’t, I got two things in my back pocket. First up is that I will be heading to Kennedy Space Center. Something I discovered during the launch of the Falcon Heavy was that Cape Canaveral was just an hour away from Orlando. I couldn’t pass up that chance of making it over there.

The second thing is a day trip to Disney World. While Disney isn’t high on my list of things to see or do, I believe I picked up a single day park hopper pass with my ELU registration. So I think I’m going? I’ll find out on Wednesday. But if I have it, I’ll be taking 3 or 4 parks in. I may not have a lot of time to wait in lines. I have heard that the lines for the Avatar ride can go up to 4 hours. Not a great use of time but I’ll take video of the lines at least!

Speaking of video, I intend to take video of what I can. One of the things I continue to do is drop the ball on taking enough video for use later in editing. I never ever do. The space center will get the whole treatment. And at this moment of time, a possible collaboration between a few other Extra Lifers. So that’s pretty cool.

The coming week will be filled with some potential for donations for my hospital, doing some networking, and seeing kids in a sucky situation have a little fun. And I’ll be taking in Orlando, a place I’ve never been to before. And Miami but I’m just there for a layover. With whatever that may come, I’ll be sure to lather on lots sunblock.
